ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Get on the phone and call your representative. Express your disapproval. Tell him or her exactly how you feel, and that you don't support this. Tell your friends to call their representatives, their Congressperson, and complain. Mention that you are a registered voter that takes your civic responsibility seriously and that you will use that vote to express your feelings about this.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

......its been so long since i posted on lj.

i think i've more or less gotten outta the habit of doing so... well, sort of anyhow

since i spend much of my online time doing things which do not necessitate actually coming out and being social....
freesky online activity not included.

still having a blast on dwarf fortress...that degree of micromanagement may be a pain at times, but it does allow for a wonderful amount of personalisation. and creativity. and openended play that is truly interesting.

oh wow, I'm such a negligent blogger. 14 weeks with no entries because i'm more fond of reading content than making content for people to exploit. ha.

Apparently I'm obsessed with the concept of a life of leisure, doing nothing important in particular, dodging boredom by doing more 'things' of undefinable utility and provenance. Or something.

................. aah yes, the yearly snafu in the family. at present, mostly consisting of justifiable worries about studies and jobs, and justifiable worrying over my sibling refusing to attend church. leading to some of the most spectacular cases of 'I'll say what I want, and completely misunderstand/not notice what you're trying to say to me.' Between my father and my mother, and between my father and my brother. Argh.

One ear in and one ear out, never mind that we have two so we can listen more carefully, not less. Think he doesn't realise that we do understand what he's saying, what we're arguing with is his method. and that given that we're plumb out of ideas, lack of interest in OPENInG our mouth and asking for help/advice is just annoying. Also dad is not taking his own advice about not making big decisions in the grip of rage. Justified or otherwise.

Makes a body wonder whether marriage and children are worth it, given the copious room for misunderstandings. On the other hand, the payoffs are reputably large, and somewhere along the way, God willing, there isn't any misunderstanding. Even if sometimes I think we could all use a good hard tap from a clue sledgehammer. Because a clue board or clue hammer doesn't seem to cut it anymore.

I have had it confirmed for me. I have a thing for thick books. Lets see, ah, Tuesday I hit up San bookshop and Central library for three Steven Erikson books. Cumulative number of pages being 698 + 1180 + 1015. It is now Friday of the same week. I've read through all of them, cover to cover. And finished a relatively shorter novel by C.H. Cherryh, 406 pages, bought on Wednesday, also. Do I ever like reading. Though there's those that say that given my fondness for Janny Wurt's and others' long, lovely epics, I love a long story. Gives detail and development properly.
